According to the High Throughput Satellite (HTS) report published by Euroconsult, HTS communications have seen a significant increase since 2019. Demand for HTS capacity is expected to grow by 26% per year over the next decade (Rachael Zisk, 2022). Compared to conventional satellite communications, HTS has unique characteristics that enable this type of satellite communications to meet the growing demand for high data capacity and high data transmission speed. There are three main reasons for the growth of HTS communications: high data throughput, cost-effective connectivity, and low antenna requirements.
High-throughput data communications
The main feature of HTS communications is its higher throughput than conventional fixed satellite service (FSS) communications, as the name implies (everything RF, 2021). Higher throughput means a significant increase in capacity using the same amount of orbital frequencies. Compared to the classic FSS, HTS is able to transmit a capacity of over 100 Gbit/s, which is significantly more than conventional satellites (talia, 2016). This is a major advantage of this type of satellite. To achieve the high capacity, HTS uses multiple narrow beams with a small footprint, unlike conventional satellites that cover a large area with one or a few beams.
